USS Mississippi Mast Raised At Vietnam Veteran's Memorial

The mast from the USS Mississippi is now on permanent display at the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Ocean Springs.

A team of Seabees helped raise the 62 foot section of steel. It sits on a concrete pedestal near the memorial wall remembering those Mississippians who were killed in the Vietnam War.

The USS Mississippi was de-commissioned in 1996. One sailor who served aboard the nuclear powered cruiser says the new display is a fitting tribute.

"Kind of broke my heart when they decommissioned her. She was a great ship. Just seeing this here on the Gulf Coast, it's really a good thing for Mississippi and for all the guys who served on board the ship, to have a reminder of her down here," said Grady Evett.

The ship's mast is the latest, but not the last addition to the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial. Plans are in the works for a special display honoring those who served in submarines.
