Moss Point opens new, improved recreational center for kids

MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) - After nearly five years, Moss Point's Sue Ellen Center is open again. Hurricane Katrina left the recreation building in ruins and forced kids to find a new place to play.

There are now new classrooms, a game room and of course a large basketball court. As soon as the doors opened, the young people couldn't wait to run in and shoot some hoops.

"You can come out here and see the little kids, have fun, and smile, and just to play basketball," teenager Gabriel Jackson said.

"It keeps you out of drugs, gangs, violence, all of that," said teen Marquis Pearis.

Rec center director Donna Joseph is also excited about the building's new look. She says it took $300,000 dollars to fix up the center.

"It has been a long road, but never the less we are here," Joseph said.

Joseph said when the center closed, it was hard on the kids in the community. That is why the city and citizens fought so hard to get open it again.

"To have it back in operation today, we know that it will not only recreate our citizens, but actually make a difference in the community," Joseph said.

The city of Moss Point wants every parent to encourage the young people in the city to take advantage of the fun facility. Hopefully, the place can grow to be the popular hangout spot it once was before the storm.

"This is yours. You need to take ownership of it, help us to keep it safe," Joseph said. "We want to make a difference with this facility, so we are going to need the entire community to make that happen."
