MS Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo will go on, with BP's sponsorship

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - It looks like even the BP oil leak in the Gulf can't stop a long time tradition from returning to Gulfport. Organizers of the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo said Friday that barring any last minute closures, the 62nd annual rodeo will go on as planned.

The Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo will be held at the Island View Casino July 1-4. And to help make sure the event can be held, BP agreed to be one of the event's sponsors.

The Rodeo board members had worried that oil would close too many fishing areas out in the gulf. However, they've been assured that saltwater fishing won't be adversely affected by the oil spill.

For the first time since Hurricane Katrina, the fishing rodeo will return to Gulfport's shoreline. Since the storm, it's been held at the Harrison County Fairgrounds, and over in Biloxi.
