MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) After nearly five years, Moss Point's Sue Ellen Recreation Center is open again. Hurricane Katrina left the recreation building in ruins and forced kids to find a new place to play. The center reopened this weekend after a $300,000 makeover that was paid for by FEMA and the city.

The kids who are already enjoying the center said they love the new look. There are classrooms, a game room and a large basketball court that as soon as the doors opened had young people immediately shooting some hoops.

"You can come out here and see the little kids, have fun, and smile, and just play basketball," said Moss Point Resident Gabriel Jackson.

Another resident, Marquis Pearis said, "It keeps you out of drugs, gangs, violence, and all of that."

Center Director Donna Joseph said when the center closed it was hard on the kids in the community and that is why the city and citizens fought so hard to get it open again.

Joseph had this message to parents and youngsters, "This is yours, you need to take ownership of it, and help us to keep it safe. We want to make a difference with this facility, so we are going to need the entire community to make that happen."
