President Obama makes his first visit to South Mississippi

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - President Barack Obama made his first visit to South Mississippi Monday to see how the BP oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico is impacting our community. In addition to this being his first visit to our state since the spill, this is his first visit here since taking office.

President Obama is expected to spend part of the day in our community assessing the ongoing efforts to counter the BP oil leak before heading to Theodore, Alabama to see the impact of the oil that has washed up in that area. The White House has said that the President will not publicly make a statement until he is in Alabama.

Later in the morning, the President received a briefing with Admiral Allen and local officials on efforts to fight the BP oil spill at the Coast Guard Station Gulfport in Gulfport, Mississippi. Some of the attendees are:

  • Mike Mangum, Jackson County Supervisor
  • Brian "Hootie" Adam, Director, Hancock County Emergency Management

This is President Obama's fourth visit to the region since the April 20th Deepwater Horizon rig explosion and fire and the ensuing oil leak from the BP well. It's a two day tour. President Obama will wrap up his visit in Pensacola, Florida.

All of his other visits to the Gulf Coast region have been to Louisiana.
