More dead turtles wash ashore in Gulfport

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - More dead turtles have washed up in Gulfport. A total of six were spotted on the beach Friday morning near the Ken Combs Pier, between Courthouse Road and Church Avenue.

Thursday, officials at the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies said they had reports of 20 dead sea turtles along the coast. They're not sure if their deaths were caused by the oil, or if they're related to shrimp season, which is currently underway in Mississippi waters.

There were no visible signs of oil on the animals, but they will be sent to NOAA for testing.

According to IMMS, as of Wednesday, a total of 119 turtles have turned up dead since the April 20 rig explosion.
