OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - An Ocean Springs police officer accused of possessing child pornography has been fired.

The Ocean Springs Board of Aldermen voted unanimously Thursday night to fire Lieutenant Steven Futral after the police department presented the findings of their internal investigation.

Futral was arrested Monday night and charged with one count of possession of child pornography. Three additional charges of child porn possession were added Wednesday after images were discovered on his work computer.

Ward Two Alderman Matt McDonnell said he believes that internet use by city employees needs to be limited.

"We certainly want to take all the safeguards and precautionary measures to make sure our employees aren't visiting web sites they shouldn't be on," McDonnell said. "I'm asking that we look at strengthening filters that we have in place on computers that city employees use to make sure we hopefully don't have to ever deal with this issue again."

But Deputy Chief of Police Mark Dunston said, based on the investigation thus far, the material downloaded on to Futral's city issued laptop did not go through the city's server.

"We will, as a police force, continue to participate with the task force in the criminal investigation," Dunston said.

McDonnell said Mayor Moran, the City Clerk and the Human Resource Director will report back to the Board of Aldermen in terms of how to strengthen the city's internet policy.

Futral is being held at the Jackson County Adult Detention Center on a $150,000 bond. If found guilty, he faces a minimum of five years and a maximum of 40 years in prison on each count.
