BP meets with Ocean Springs officials about oil fighting products

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) – BP got a firsthand look at two new oil fighting products that could help in this Coastal Crisis. Ocean Springs officials have teamed up with two companies to promote the products they feel will protect our coastline.

"I am doing this to make an oil slick in here," Mark Shaw said.

Mark Shaw is demonstrating how a new Ultra Microbe product works. He says the non-toxic product can be sprinkled in water and on marshland to eat up the oil.

"If the microbes are working properly, immediately they start combining with the oxygen, and the water, and the food source, which is oil. They start breaking it down immediately that fast."

This is one of the two products Ocean Springs is backing to help combat this monster oil leak in the gulf.

The other tool is called Gunderboom. Bill Gunderson and his team invented what they call a "long term defense." Unlike the boom in the water now, they say their boom is sturdier, stronger, and deeper.

"It has been tested during the Valdez incident in Alaska, where they had much greater current and tidal waves," Mayor Connie Moran said.

Mayor Moran admits the products are costly, but feels BP should invest more in protecting our coastline now, than another massive oil cleanup later. BP officials did not say yes to the products at Thursday's meeting. They mayor says they've agreed to meet with DMR and city leaders before making a decision.

"We want to act quickly," Moran said.
