GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A state inmate was killed Thursday during a work detail in Gulfport. It happened around 9am at Clower Thornton Nature Trail on East Railroad as the work crew was cutting the tall grass in the park.

Mireyel Scott, 33, of Leflore County, was a state inmate trusty on loan to the city of Gulfport. Several city workers and trusties said they heard his mower stop, went to check on him, and found the entire rider mower upside down in a ditch.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove called it an unfortunate accident.

"He was cutting grass back there near the ditch, and it appears at this point in time that he got off too close and the ground gave way," Hargrove said. "It was a Scag lawn mower that flipped over and landed on top of him."

"It's just a sad day for the city of Gulfport," Gulfport Police Chief Alan Weatherford said. "Whether it was a trusty or city employee, our heart goes out to the family of the deceased individual."

Weatherford said their concern is the ongoing investigation and also to get the other employees and the trusties grief counseling."

City employees and other trusties working the beautification crew were visibly upset. They tried to save the victim by freeing him from the seat belt on the mower. They said they took him out of the water in the ditch and performed CPR until help arrived.

Mireyel Scott was pronounced dead at the scene from either drowning or crushing. An autopsy will be performed Friday to determine the exact cause of death.
