Ocean Springs wants BP to be proactive before oil comes ashore

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) – Ocean Springs leaders have their eyes on two products they feel the city needs now, before any oil invades Jackson County. Later today, they'll ask BP to buy those products and protect the shoreline from significant oil damage.

The products are an ocean boom called Gunderboom and a bioremedication product that can be sprayed on marshes if they're polluted by the oil.

According to an e-mail sent to WLOX News, the Ocean Springs Board of Aldermen voted Tuesday night to authorize Mayor Connie Moran to strongly request that BP procure the products and have them in place now to protect the ecosystems in Jackson/Harrison Counties.

Ocean Springs will make that request to BP at 1:00 today during a meeting at the Mary C O'Keefe Cultural Arts Center. Local leaders have invited a BP representative to attend the meeting. The DMR's Dr. Bill Walker and the DEQ's Trudy Fisher have also been invited. City leaders have also asked BP for an update on skimming activities around Mississippi's barrier islands.
