Art with a taste of beer

WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) - Waveland artist Scott Blackwell calls himself a contemporary humorist. His playful multi media art is full of vibrant colors with a regional twist.

"I like the zest of color. My work has Caribbean and Zydeco flavor with a Cajun accent and, of course, a New Orleans influence," Blackwell said as he stood by pieces that are part of a new series of work called "It's All About Beer."

"There are two things I love. I love art and I love beer. With a combination of the two, I thought it would be a good series," Blackwell said.

You can see his fun beer themed creations at Gallery 220 on Main Street in Bay St. Louis.

We found Blackwell outside his Waveland studio grinding plywood. He puts the wood over tin, then uses acrylic paint to bring it to life.

His abstract fish with exaggerated lips have kind of become his signature image.

"People get a kick out of it," Blackwell said.

The artist grew up in Florida and moved to Louisiana. His work reflects his life in the Bayou state.

Blackwell said his work is sold in galleries in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Michigan.

"People in 24 countries have purchased my art," Blackwell said proudly as he worked on another colorful creation in Waveland, Mississippi.
