Free clinic brightens smiles in Jackson County

MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) - The smiles of some Jackson County children are brighter today, thanks to a program that offers free dental care to kids who might otherwise not be able to see a dentist.

The program is offered by Barnes Family Dentistry, with the help of the Boys and Girls Club. And it's proving to be very popular during a three day run at Escatawpa Elementary School in Moss Point.

On Tuesday, the children sat patiently, waiting their turn to lie down on the dental chair.  Some were a bit nervous, while others were more on the playful side.  But they would all leave the free clinic with a healthy smile.

Larry Wilson is a semi-retired dentist.  He said the operation is first class all the way.

"We just do real good exams on them. We do a lot of preventative work on them. We talk to the kids, take x-rays, take oral pictures," Wilson said.  "I mean, it is a very, very thorough examination and prevention type program."

Benjamin Green was a good sport, despite the somewhat intimidating sights and sounds of a dental exam. He opened wide and the doctor worked his magic.

Meanwhile, assistants stayed busy fielding phone calls and making appointments.

"It makes you feel good," Wilson said. "A lot of these children would not be able to be seeing a dentist right now. Some of the treatment we are giving them is going to prevent further problems down the road, and it makes you feel good in your heart."

So, after a few minutes in the dentist's chair and a bright new smile, what is Benjamin going to do with that new smile?  Is he planning on impressing the girls? His answer was short, but to the point.

"Yes, yes," Benjamin said.

The free clinic will offer services for one more day, Wednesday from 9am to 3pm at Escatawpa Elementary School in Moss Point.
