Seabees build new playground at DeLisle Elementary

DELISLE, MS (WLOX) - It took a team of Navy Seabees just six hours to complete a new playground at DeLisle Elementary Saturday.  Students at the school haven't had a playground onsite since Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.

Seabees stormed the campus with parents and volunteers who've worked to raise money for the playground. Principal Ramona Berry said the new equipment will be a nice surprise for students when they return in August.

"We have spent last year in the trailers with no equipment and we have decided that the children deserve a place to play. It's just as important to play as to learn," Berry said.

With their "Can Do" motto, Seabees build all over the world for the military, but at home they often help make community projects come together.

"It's always great when we get a chance to give back to the community. We know after Hurricane Katrina this school had a lot of damage. Helping the kids get back to a normal school environment with a playground was pretty important to us," said Seabee Builder Chief Manuel Baca.

When finished, the playground will have swings, a rock climbing wall and six slides.

DuPont, the DeLisle Elementary PTO and the Pass Christian School District funded the $20,000 of playground equipment.

Principal Berry said the school has made do with limited play areas since the storm. She said the students aren't the only ones looking forward to seeing the playground in use.

"I'm retiring after this year and this is the gift I wanted to make sure the children had before the new principal comes on board. I am looking forward to seeing the children as they play and interact with one another."
