Saturday is Family Farm Day in Jackson County

VANCLEAVE, MS (WLOX) - How many children these days know the difference between a mule and a horse, a goat and a sheep, or a dairy cow and bull?

You can find the answers to all those questions and much more Saturday at "Family Day at the Farm." The Jackson County Extension Service is hosting the event at the Vancleave Horse Arena from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. It's free and open to all ages.

"Our society has sped up so much that we are forgetting to pass on to our youth the importance of agriculture to foods, wood, and the clothes," explained Stephanie Pendleton, Director of JC Extension Service. "Family Day at the Farm is to help reconnect youth and adults with agriculture using a variety of hands-on activities for the children."

Those activities include learning how to garden, milk a cow, make butter, grind cornmeal, identify common trees, build a birdhouse using recycled materials, and preserving homegrown fruits and vegetables. There will also be an assortment of farm animals at the event.

"The best farms to visit are ones that have something to eat. We will have fresh sugarcane syrup to taste, homemade ice cream, and farm raised catfish," Pendleton said.

Vancleave Coastal Family Health Center will also be on site to perform free children's health screenings.

Farm Bureau and the JC Soil and Water Conservation District are co-sponsors of this year's event.
