Big Play hopes to score a tourism hole-in-one

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Four and a half years ago, Hurricane Katrina wiped away just about every family attraction on the coast.  But a major sign of recovery can be seen on the Biloxi beachfront now.

Big Play is open for business, and a steady stream of would be golf pros are trying their hand at scoring a hole in one. The 36 hole miniature golf course is the dream of RW Development owner Ray Wooldridge.

"I've always said that we are here for the long term," Wooldridge said. "And I think one of the big elements that was missing, of course, was family fun and family entertainment. So we're very happy with it."

Also happy is Rodney Parfait and his family, who spent Monday afternoon shooting for low scores.  Parfait said this type of entertainment may be able to help the coast rebuild its reputation as the place to be for fun in the sun.

"It should, I hope it does," Parfait said.  "It's a very nice place to come to on weekends, or anytime."

Even for folks who live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, this latest family attraction, the first one built since Katrina, is a big hit and badly needed.

"Oh this should help out a lot," Tracy Schmidt said.  "We've only been here a year, and this is the first time we've seen anything like this. So this is great."

Tracy and her husband are stationed at Keesler Air Force Base, and family time at a family friendly place is important to them.  But what do others think of the course?

"We've only had one good rating; The rest have been excellent," Wooldridge said proudly.

Big Play is located at the corner of Highway 90 and Veterans Avenue in Biloxi. Other additions to the property are in the works, including batting cages and a go-cart course.  A nightclub and restaurant called Biloxi Breeze is also a possibility.
