BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Biloxi's newest residents could start to see the changes that come with city living as early as next week. On Thursday, city officials learned an annexation judge had given Biloxi part of the area it had requested.

For homeowners along Oakridge Place, the days of country living are over. Biloxi city officials say they are ready to start offering some services to the newly annexed area immediately.

"We just got this analysis, the judge's decision Thursday," said Biloxi Community Development Director Jerry Creel. "We've not had a chance to all meet and sit down and go over it but at the director meeting Tuesday morning, I would assume the mayor is going to go ahead and tell us to immediately get started with police coverage, fire coverage, planning and zoning."

Creel said, "The only service that will take a little time to get up there is water and sewer and the city of Biloxi made a commitment to have that there within five years."

Biloxi's new 2.5 square miles has the new Highway 67 running right through the heart of it.

"The area that we're getting is somewhat residential at this point but for the most part it's rural," Creel said. "But we see it being a major commercial corridor ."

It may not take long for Biloxi to see the benefits of expanding its city limits. Creel says a developer has been waiting for the outcome Biloxi-D'iberville annexation battle to more forward.

"It's 1,200-acre mixed use project. It's going to have retail, restaurant, hotel, motel, commercial, residential," Creel said. "It's a project that has Biloxi written all over it. It's clearly a resort level development which you know for years Biloxi has touted itself as a resort destination."

D'Iberville was also awarded 2.5 square miles of land. The annexation judge ruled another six square miles would remain in unincorporated Harrison County. @@@
