JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of summer and the Jackson County Recreation Department has reopened the perfect way to beat the heat. The County's splash pads at St. Andrews Park, Lum Cumbest Park, and Eddie Khayat Park are now reactivated and ready to spray from 8 a.m. till 8 p.m. all summer.

"A splash pad is basically a ground level water fountain which is open on all sides," County Recreation Director Jack Hamilton explained. "They provide a fun and safe way for kids (and parents) to cool off while enjoying the parks during the hot summer months. The pads will be open throughout the summer and are free."

Each splash pad has 12 water features including the "Spritzzzer", "Stream Weaver", and "Water Inverter." The splash pads are motion activated and recycle their own water. The pads' computers do shut themselves down occasionally for 15 minutes for water treatment.

Along with the splash pads several other County facilities will also be open throughout the holiday weekend including- Whispering Pines Golf Course, 12 public parks, and 24 boat launches.

Whispering Pines' club house and golf course will open at 7 a.m., with a "first come, first play" policy. The club house closes at 5:45 p.m. but golfers can continue play until dark.

The Jackson County Board of Supervisors is closing County offices on Monday, May 31 for Memorial Day. Despite the holiday, residents can still conduct official business through the County's website, www.co.jackson.ms.us. All County offices and departments reopen on Tuesday, June 1 with regular schedules.
