Bikers gather to celebrate Memorial Day

HARRISON COUTNY, MS (WLOX) - The hogs are back for another blowout in South Mississippi. Friday, the Gulfport Dragway was packed with a wide assortment of motor cycles.

For the 28th consecutive Memorial Day, the Asgard Motorcycle Club is staging its annual blowout. And the charitable event that once drew just Harleys is now open to all motorcycle riders.

"Drag races, bike show, slow race, barrel race," Smokey Stepputat said, listing some of the weekend's activities. "Drag races throughout the whole weekend. Top fuelers going over 150 miles per hour. So there'll be lots of noise and lots of fun down here."

Every competition is tailored to entertain a crowd that likes to go hog wild, especially over Memorial Day weekend.

"We came out here for the all Harley drags," Mike Shockley said. "We come every year for this. We're coming out here to have a good time."

"It's just fun," Jay Shockley said. "A lot of drinking, a lot of partying, a lot of carrying on."

Attendance at the blowout has been off since Hurricane Katrina. Now an oil spill threatens the coast, and some worry that could spoil this party. But Smokey's not worried. His group opened the blowout to all bikers this year, thinking that would kick start the area's summer tourism season.

"We've lowered our prices this year because of the economy and hopefully make it more affordable for more people to come in," Smokey Stepputat said.

Chris Gray is one of the bikers who decided this was the perfect year to roll into the dragway.

"There's just so many events to do out here you just can't name them all," Gray said.

The Gulfport Memorial Day Blowout runs through Monday at the Canal Road dragway. On Sunday, the blowout will honor veterans in a Memorial day service.
