Ocean Springs man gets 30 years for sexual battery of a minor

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) – An Ocean Springs man will spend the next 30 years behind bars after a jury found him guilty of sexual battery of a minor.

Thursday night, a Jackson County jury returned a guilty verdict against Michael Anthony Fountain, 51, on all four counts of sexual battery of a minor. The jury found he committed the acts between 2006 and 2008 in Ocean Springs.

Fountain will not be eligible for parole or early release, and he will have to register as a sex offender for life.

"I am proud the jury considered the evidence and did the right thing. This man targeted children in our community and I feel that justice was served," said District Attorney Tony Lawrence.

The victim, who was nine at the time of the sexual assaults, testified on Tuesday. The crimes occurred at Fountain's house on Clark Avenue and came to light on January 22, 2008, when the victim reported abuse in another matter.

The subsequent Ocean Springs Police Department investigation led law enforcement to determine that Fountain sexually assaulted the minor. Testimony at trial also revealed that Fountain had had an ongoing sexual relationship with another individual that began when she was a minor.

"The victims in this case were brave and courageous and should be commended. Law enforcement did an excellent job investigating this case which had a lot of overlapping facts. Their investigation gave us the tools to secure the conviction," said Assistant District Attorney Angel Myers who tried the case along with Bobby Knochel.
