Hotdog Good Time on Memorial Day

Nothing's more of a staple at holiday cookouts than hotdogs. Why not drop a few on the grill this Memorial Day weekend. 

Heat and Eat Hotdogs:

Franks are ready to eat in only a few minutes to prepare yours:

  • If frozen, thaw first.
  • Boil: 4-5 minutes.
  • Grill: Medium heat, 6-10 minutes
  • Microwave: Wrap in paper towels; heat 30-35 seconds on high. (Ovens may vary, times approximate)
  • For kids under 5 years: cut lengthwise then slice to prevent a choking hazard.

 

 

Tools for Grilling:

 

  • Tongs or spatula: for turning grilled food 
  • Disposable aluminum tray: for heating side foods like baked beans 
  • Wire grill brush: for cleaning grill 
  • Insulate, flame-retardant mitts: for handling hot coals and grill 
  • Long-handled tongs: for handling briquettes  

How to Grill:

  • Keep food from sticking by rubbing grill w/ vegetable oil or non-stick cooking spray. 
  • Leaving space around each food item on the grill allows for even cooking and smoke penetration.
  • Turn meat just once on the grill.
  • Use tongs or a spatula to turn food. Franks can lose moisture and flavorful juices when pierced by a fork.
  • Keep a spray bottle filled with water handy so you can sprits flare-ups, which can blacken your food.
  • Brush the grilling surface (once it's cooled) with a wire brush to remove any stuck on food.


Nacho Hotdogs

Ingredients:

  • 4          Franks
  • 4          Hotdog Buns
  • ½         cup prepared queso cheese sauce from jar, heated
  • 2          tablespoons chopped jalapeno peppers
  • ½         cup flavored tortilla chips, crushed

Directions:

  1. Prepare franks according to package directions.
  2. Fill each bun with a frank. Top each with ¼ of heated cheese sauce, jalapeno peppers and crushed tortilla chips. Serve immediately.

Hotdog Burritos

Ingredients:

  • 1          pkg. Franks
  • 8          corn or whole wheat tortillas (6-inch), warmed
  • 1          jar prepared salsa
  • 2          cups shredded lettuce
  • 1          cup (4 oz.) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1          large tomato, chopped
  • 1          small onion, chopped
  • 1          cup prepared black bean dip

Directions:

  1. Prepare franks according to package directions.
  2. Fill tortillas with franks and remaining ingredients; roll-up.

 

Stuffed Franks

 

Ingredients:

  • 1          pkg. Franks
  • 2          teaspoons spicy brown mustard
  • 1          cup (4 oz.) shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½         teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼         teaspoon dry mustard
  • 8          slices pre-cooked bacon
  • 1          pkg. hotdog buns

Directions:

  1. Preheat grill. Combine mustard, cheddar cheese, Worcestershire sauce and dry mustard in a small bowl.
  2. Slit the hotdogs lengthwise down the center, forming a deep pocked, but not cutting all the way through. Fill pockets with cheese mixture. Wrap a slice of bacon around each frank and secure both ends with wooden toothpicks. Place on grates.
  3. Grill for 4 to 6 minutes or until bacon is crisp and cheese is melted. Serve in bun.
