Now is the time to prepare for Hurricane Season 2010

The start of the 2010 hurricane season is just hours away. Those who study hurricanes say this will probably be an above average year for hurricanes.

In addition to the normal storm worries, the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico has many people concerned about a tropical system pushing oil onto our beaches and even inland.

Also new this year, watches and warnings for hurricanes and tropical storms will be issued 12 hours earlier than in previous years. That's to give you more time to evacuate.

Now is the time for all of us to prepare for this year's hurricane season. Remember to check your flood insurance and homeowners insurance. You can't make changes once a storm is in the Gulf.

And have your family hurricane supply kit stocked and ready to go. You can go to our hurricane page on this web site for a list of what you need to stock.

Now is also the time to plan for where your family will evacuate if a storm comes. Remember if you live in a low lying area, near the sound or on a river where water can rise, you definitely will need to evacuate.

You also want to make sure that everyone in your family is part of the planning and knows what to do in case of a hurricane. Having a plan will make it less stressful on you and your entire family if a hurricane does threaten us this year.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to, or post your comments below.
