Unsung heroes of the coastal crisis are from Mississippi

The unsung heroes of the coastal oil crisis may be the researchers and scientists who live right here in south Mississippi. They work for Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Jackson State.

Four schools that suddenly face one daunting task, analyze the massive oil spill, and determine how it may impact the gulf, its marine life, and our coastline. The work they're doing at the spill site, in the middle of the Mississippi Sound, and in their labs at Stennis Space Center and the Gulf Coast Research Lab are critical to how Mississippi and the nation respond to this crisis.

Last week, USM invited the media on a four hour expedition out to Horn Island. It gave us a glimpse into how the university is using its scientific minds to ensure our way of life is protected. Every fish captured in a net, and every water sample bottled in a flask contains valuable information about the current health of the sound.

The analysis done by USM researchers at ground zero of this catastrophic spill will help all of us feel a lot more comfortable about the vitality of the gulf, and the health of our seafood industry.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
