MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) - A deadly weekend incident in a normally quiet Moss Point neighborhood has left the people who live there fearful and shaken. They are vowing to put an end to any more violence.

Wembley Drive Neighbors hate that a shooting happened on their quiet street.

"It is tragic situation. Two elderly people, minding their own business, were attacked and shot," resident Dunk Ellis said.

Police say the alleged shooter, 23-year-old Cornelious Ferrande of New Orleans, hurt the couple Sunday. Before the shooting, neighbor Dunk Ellis said Ferrande was over at his home begging for money and a ride to a bus station.

"You never know what people are going to do," Ellis said.

Police said Charles and Nita Ray couple didn't know Ferrande. They said Charles Ray shot and killed the intruder when he forced his way in the back of the home with a gun.

Folks in the neighborhood refuse to deal with any more violence. They plan to start a neighborhood watch to keep the area safe.

"In broad daylight, you need to look behind you, and you need to keep an open eye on everything," resident Wanda Hamm said.

Wanda and Donald Hamm feel it's sad they have to change the way they live after 50 years in the neighborhood. But they believe it's better to take safety steps now than having another crime happen on Wembley Drive.

"I think it is a wake up for lots of people in neighborhood that things are not as safe as we think they are," Donald Hamm said.

Charles Ray has been released from the hospital. His wife is in stable condition at a hospital in Jackson.
