New storm shelters to become a reality today

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - South Mississippians will soon have three new storm shelters to take refuge in when our community is threatened by a hurricane or other tropical system.

This morning Harrison County is breaking ground on the new shelters, which are all located on the west side of the county. Harrison County received $9 million in federal money to build the three shelters.

"They are very important and I am happy we are to the point of the groundbreaking. Its been a long road," said Harrison County Emergency Management Director Rupert Lacy.

Lacy added, "It's going to be a great day for the protection of the citizens of Harrison County."

The shelters are expected to be completed before the 2011 Hurricane Season.

Today's groundbreaking will take place at Ramsey O'Neal Ballpark on Saucier Lizana Road at 10:30 a.m.

Jessica Bowman will cover that event and show you exactly where all three shelters are being built, later today on and WLOX News.
