Buckle up, it just may save your life

School is nearly out and Memorial Day is fast approaching. Both of those events mean more of us will be taking to the road. Unfortunately with more folks on the highways, the risk for auto accidents increases.

For that reason the Mississippi Department of Public Safety is launching its Click it or Ticket campaign. The campaign aims to educate the public on why it is important to buckle up each time you get into your vehicle.

Last year in Mississippi 700 people died on our state's roads and highways and 68% of them were not wearing seatbelts. Authorities say if seatbelts had been used, more than 200 of those killed might have lived. And, one out of four serious injuries is caused by people not buckled in, being thrown into each other.

Parents, a common cause of death to children is when adults who don't wear their seatbelts become deadly missiles during the accident. We protect our children with immunizations, about 80% of American children are immunized, but when it comes to buckling up, less than 10% are safely restrained.

Don't wait for troopers to stop and check you, buckle up yourself and everyone in your car, it just may save your lives.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
