NEW ORLEANS, LA (WLOX) - The area off limits to fishing in the Gulf of Mexico because of the BP oil leak has more than doubled in size.
Tuesday, NOAA expanded the area of federal waters where fishing is banned. The restricted area now covers over 45,000 square miles in the Gulf of Mexico. It encompasses 19 percent of all federal waters in the gulf.
NOAA said while all recreational and commercial fishing is banned in the area transit through the zone is still allowed.
The restricted area still does not expand into Mississippi waters; however, NOAA strongly advises fisherman not to fish in areas where oil or oil sheen is present, even if those areas are not currently closed to fishing.
