Coast Guard Auxiliary offers free boat inspections

LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - Tom Hammack has dedicated the past several years to one thing, boater safety.  Thursday afternoon, he spent time checking Britt Garcia's boat.  Obtaining the highly prized safety sticker from the Coast Guard Auxiliary could mean a prosperous few months for Garcia.

"I'm trying to get on with BP and the oil clean-up, running the oil booms," Garcia said.

So is another boat owner.  He also hopes that BP will take note and hire him to help clean the spill.  After the inspection, the sticker was his.

Even though these safety inspections are not required by British Petroleum to work for them as a contractor in cleaning up the oil spill, Hammock said it's highly recommended that you get one anyway.

"Definitely, because we hope we can save some lives with what we're doing on this," Hammack said.  "We check for things and it's amazing how many people think they have everything up to date, but don't."

There's another reason why every boat owner should get the free inspection.  It has nothing to do with safety, but everything to do with money, according to Hammack.

"Most boat insurance companies will give a discount, most of the time it's at least 10 percent, but that's specific to the insurance companies. We don't guarantee they're going to do that."

Even if they don't, a safe and secure boat will give every owner something that money can't buy, peace of mind on the water.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary offers the free inspections several times a year at most of the coast small craft harbors.
