WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) - It's a site that hasn't been seen in close to five years. Campers rolling through the gates of Buccaneer State Park.

Cheryl and Wilbert Necaise would camp at Buccaneer at least twice a month before the storm. They say there is one major noticeable difference at the park.

"There are a lot of trees gone, no shade. It's not shady back here like it was before the hurricane," Cheryl Necaise said. "We're glad it's open. We were big customers before the hurricane."

Buccaneer has a total of 276 camp sites, most with water, sewer and electrical hook-ups. 102 of those sites are now open, while the remaining 174 are still undergoing storm repairs.

Stu Rayburn is the Buccaneer State Park Manager.

"You look around, the park looks absolutely beautiful," Rayburn said. "A lot of work has been done, but by no means are we across the finish line yet. There is still an enormous amount of work to be done."

That work includes the ever popular Buccaneer Bay Water Park, the activity center, a camp store and laundry facilities.

Rayburn said, "That's all in phase three, and we expect that to start either by the end of this month or the first of next months for sure."

Waveland Mayor Tommy Longo said, "This is great news in the recovery process of the city of Waveland and our whole community. This is about economic development. It's about bringing tourists in. Before hurricane Katrina we had a million visitors a year that came to Buccaneer Park and brought new money to the territory."

Money he said will be spent in local shops, restaurants, casinos and gas stations.

Necaise said, "Were just happy to be back!"

Park leaders say the water park and the other amenities are expected to open by summer of 2011.
