Spread the message: Mississippi is open for business

Many of our friends who are in the tourist business face an uncertain future this summer. The oil spill is a national story and potential tourists who live in Memphis, Atlanta, Birmingham and even up state Mississippi are hearing news about the oil spill on a daily basis.

Many of them believe that because of the spill, South Mississippi is closed for business. But, as we all know, that is not true, and the folks in the tourism industry are trying to get that word out.

You can help too. Become an ambassador for the Mississippi Gulf Coast by telling your friends, family and business acquaintances that the coast is open for business.

And, instead of traveling to other places this summer, become a tourist in our own backyard. Go to Ship Island, paddle down the Wolf or Pascagoula rivers, play at the water park or go to one of our many museums. From golf to camping there is so much to choose from in South Mississippi.

Tourism is an important part of our economy and the oil spill presents a number of challenges. But, by all of us working together, we can soften the blow to our economy.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
