Gov. Barbour: South Mississippi is open for business

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - South Mississippi is open for business, there is no oil on South Mississippi shores or barrier islands and after three weeks very little has changed in the proximity of oil to Mississippi shores. That is the message Governor Haley Barbour gave at a media briefing Wednesday afternoon in Biloxi.

Barbour also took the national news media to task for reporting that, he says, is negatively impacting South Mississippi.

"One thing that is harmful is the news media in other parts of the country telling folks it's like the Exxon Valdez," Barbour said. "Let me just tell you a fact, our beaches, waters, barrier islands, golf courses are just like they were a month ago."

The governor reiterated that there is no oil anywhere where tourists would go and our fishing waters are open. Barbour said that BP would be responsible for any negative impact on local businesses like restaurants and charter boat captains who lose business, even if the oil never touches our shores.

Governor Barbour said our area has been blessed thus far and he hopes we will continue to be blessed. He said we are prepared and getting better prepared every day.

The governor said about 9,000 people have volunteered and 315 vessels have been signed up should a cleanup be needed. Despite those impressive numbers, the governor said more volunteers and vessels are needed. He encouraged anyone who could to sign up and get training so that we will be prepared should the worst happen.
