Deanna Johannsen's Winning Project Homefront Essay

Congratulations to Deanna Johannsen, our April Project Homefront essay winner! Read her winning story below, or click here to enter your own essay. We'll pick one each month to win a family dinner and spa package.

My husband and father to our two beautiful children has deployed to Afghanistan with NMCB133 a little over a month ago. This deployment is not like the others. He is in a WAR ZONE now and there is not a minute that goes by that I am not worried about him.

Our son is 9 years old and daughter is 7. It has really affected our son, because he is at the age that he knows what is going on in this CRAZY world that we live in. I found him on the internet watching news from Afghanistan.

I said, "Honey, what are you doing?"

He replied, "Mom, I am trying to check on Daddy."

I thought that was so sweet. Every night we say our blessings and include Daddy and all of the troops serving abroad.

My husband is in a location with no running water and is sleeping in a tent. They bathe with baby wipes and wash their clothes in a mop bucket.

Thank God he is able to call home every once in a while and get on the internet from time to time.

There are days that I feel so frustrated with everything. It is hard taking care of two children, working a full time job, being a military member myself as a Army Reservist, and dealing with the stresses of having the man I love over there.

I thank God every day for everything that we have and pray for his safe return home.

14 years as part of the Ole Miss football program as a coach or player has prepared Matt Luke for this opportunity. Admittedly it doesn't come under the circumstances he might've envisioned. But with a Rebel bloodline that runs 3 generations deep, the position fulfills a lifelong dream. "I can truly tell y'all today that this is my dream job," Luke said Monday at his first press conference as Ole Miss interim head coach. "It's a job that I've been preparing my whole li...

The Pascagoula Panthers open the 2017 football season on the road. In fact, their first three games are road contests. That scheduling quirk may give field turf crews just enough time to get War Memorial Stadium ready for the September 8 home opener. The wet weather in South Mississippi is placing quite the burden on construction workers as they attempt to complete stadium renovations. The project was suppose to be finished before the beginning of Pascagoula's football season.
