Workforce housing project breaks ground in Gulfport

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A groundbreaking ceremony will take place Tuesday for a $41 million workforce housing project in Gulfport. The first phase of Piper Woods Subdivision will have 72 units built on Orange Grove Road. A second phase will be built at another location in North Gulfport.

The project developer is Southern States Housing Group, one of about 30 organizations either building housing units or providing financial assistance to provide access to affordable housing post- Katrina through the Mississippi Development Authority's Long Term Workforce Housing Program.

At least 51 percent of the homes will be reserved for low and moderate income residents who earn below 120 percent of Area Median Income.

To date, MDA has assisted more than 28,000 homeowners around the coast with direct housing assistance (homeowners grants) and provided about 5,000 affordable rental units through the Small Rental, Public Housing and Long Term Workforce Housing programs combined.

MDA says of the $5.4 billion in post-Katrina federal assistance for Mississippi, about $3 billion is for housing recovery initiatives like this one.
