Mississippi State Used A Big Sixth Inning To Upend Southern Miss 6-4

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) _ Matthew Maniscalco went 4-for-5 with two RBIs as Mississippi State rallied for five runs in the sixth to beat Southern Mississippi 6-4 on Tuesday night.

Jeff Cook hit his 17th home run of the season _ an inside the park job with a man on _ to give the Golden Eagles (30-11) a 2-0 lead in the third. He now has 44 career homers, second on the
school's career list.

Southern Miss led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, when Mississippi State (29-9-1) finally got to Southern Miss starter Cliff Russum.

The first four batters reached base against the right-hander and he was replaced by Ray Antonelli. But pinch-hitter Robby Goodson had an RBI single and Jeff Butts drove in two with a double as
Mississippi State took a 5-3 lead.

Mississippi State starter Jeff Lacher remained undefeated this season, winning a matchup with former Hattiesburg High School teammate Russum.

Lacher (5-0) allowed seven hits and three runs in six innings.

Russum (5-5), who had won his last four starts, gave up six hits and four runs in five innings.

Jonathan Papelbon allowed only one hit in the final 1 1-3 innings to earn his fifth save and up the Bulldogs' record in nonconference games to 18-3-1.

Both the Bulldogs and Golden Eagles entered the two-game midweek series nationally ranked and contending for titles in their respective leagues.

Game 2 is Wednesday night with Brad Corley pitching for Mississippi State against either Noah Tritz or Brent Leach.
