Leaders to update Harrison County oil protection efforts

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - This afternoon Mayors from across Harrison County, along with county officials will gather for a joint briefing to give a countywide status report on preparations and safeguards being put in place should oil from the Deepwater Horizon oil leak threaten our shores.

Harrison County Emergency Management Agency Director Rupert Lacy will discuss short term preparations that are underway, as well as planning for the long term.

Also among those giving updates will be Harrison County Sand Beach Director Bobby Weaver who will talk about work being done to protect beaches, inlets and nesting areas. If you've traveled the beach this week you probably saw workers building protective berms that will cover all 26 miles of beach.

WLOX News will steam that joint briefing at the Harrison County Emergency Management Agency at 3:30 this afternoon on WLOX.com and also carry it live on WLOX-TV to give you the latest on what is being done to protect our shores.
