HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - As the world watches the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and wonders what will happen next, Dr. Steven Lohrenz is gathering critical data.

Dr. Lohrenz is chair of the University of Southern Mississippi's Department of Marine Science.

"We're trying, through a series of efforts to develop a baseline of information about conditions, wildlife and the environment along the coast," said Lohrenz.

The Department of Marine Science operates at Stennis Space Center and is working with NOAA and other federal agencies on tracking the spill.

Dr. Lohrenz said the information compiled during this situation could be useful in dealing with other spills.

"We're in uncharted territory," Lohrenz said. "We have to learn and be better prepared to deal with anything in the future."

Dr. Steven Lohrenz is a scientist with a critical role in the battle to fight the spill, but he's also a coast resident with a personal stake in what happens.

"I feel, and I echo the thoughts of other folks here and on the coast, that everyone wants to do something to help."
