BILOXI, MS (WLOX) – Governor Haley Barbour and other state leaders met with legislators and county and city officials on Monday for a briefing on the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Governor Barbour reminded everyone to keep the situation in perspective.

"There's no reason to panic right now," the Governor told the crowd. "We need to pray for the best and prepare for the worst, but don't assume anything."

Lt. Governor Phil Bryant had a unique take on the oil spill. Bryant said if the spill hits the coast, it would be an economic disaster. But he also worries that uncertainty is taking its toll.

"My concern is that people will be canceling conventions and vacations. People could be canceling hotel reservations. The impact of that could be tremendous," Bryant said.

Linda Houghton, a representative from British Petroleum, was on hand to answer questions. Everyone in attendance wanted to make sure BP will live up to its obligation to pay for the clean up operation and subsequent damage.

"BP is the responsible party," Houghton said. "We will be here. We will clean it up, and we will pay for it."

The meeting was held at the Department of Marine Resources offices in Biloxi.
