BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Hurricane Hunters at Keesler Air Force Base conducted a special tour for a very special guest on Thursday.
Craig Fugate, Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, was on base for a first hand look at how the Hurricane Hunter's mission is critical to FEMA and the National Hurricane Center.
"The technicians and scientists who fly into the eye of a storm give the best possible forecast to our citizens. Without them, the Hurricane Center could not do its job," Fugate said.
This was Fugate's first visit to Keesler where the 403rd wing and the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron fly C-130 J aircraft into the center of storms collecting valuable data.
The 2010 hurricane season starts June first and the Hurricane Hunters are getting ready for their call to duty.
"As soon as the storms start appearing, we hit the switch," Col. John Fox said.
