Better communication needed

Why did Biloxi schools superintendent and its school board give the public just a few days notice before voting to shut down three schools? We've been wondering that a lot the last few days. And so have angry parents, who don't want to see Nichols, Beauvoir and Michel sixth grade get the budgetary axe.

We're sure a lot of thought, and a lot of soul searching went into that difficult decision. However, we're also certain that the plan to close the three schools should have been shared with the public sooner than just a few days before the final vote.

The perceived lack of communication between the school system and its parents has created a controversy that may end up in court. And that's the last place this budget battle needs to go, because it will end up making students the real losers in the school system. Money that could have been used in the classroom, would instead go to defending the actions of the school board.

Also better communication might have dispelled some thoughts that the move to close Nichols is based on race. We urge the school district and superintendent to hold additional meetings with parents and other stake holders.

Tough decisions are required in these times. How well they are communicated to the public can make them more bearable.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to, or post your comments below.
