Now is the time to give back - - The News for South Mississippi

WLOX-TV Editorial:

Now is the time to give back

The scenes look so hauntingly familiar out of the Mississippi tornado zone. In Yazoo City there are piles of debris where there were once homes and neighborhoods, family and friends mourn the loss of loved ones, and there is a desperate need for help.

All of us who survived Hurricane Katrina know what it means for volunteers to come to our rescue.  For people to give water, tarps, food and temporary shelter when you desperately need it.

Now is our time to give back, to pay it forward. And there are so many ways to give, through the American Red Cross, your church, or any of your favorite charities that give help in times of disaster.

If you want to volunteer your time to help the tornado victims you can call 888-353-1793, the volunteer hotline that MEMA is using to coordinate efforts.

Without donations and people volunteering their time to help, South Mississippi would not be at the stage of recovery that we have reached nearly five years after Katrina.

The tornado victims are just beginning to dig out of the devastation in the western-central part of our state. Reach deep and give what you can give and help them on the path to recovery, just as we were helped.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to, or post your comments below.
