Champions Tour event gets underway with Pro-Am game

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic is officially underway. It all began Monday with a pro-am at the Grand Bear in Saucier, although the tournament will take place at Fallen Oak.

Tournament director, Steve Nieman called it an exciting day.

"There has been quite a buildup, and we are really looking forward to this," Nieman said.

There is a lot of planning that goes into an event like this, but Nieman and his staff have done it all in less than five months.

"The volunteer support, the sponsor support has been something to behold," Nieman added. "We have had people stop us on the street just to ask about the tournament, it is overwhelming to me on a daily basis how excited people are."

A few of the Champion Tour players are already in town. One of those is CBS commentator Bobby Clampett. He just turned 50 and will be playing in his first Champions Tour event. Clampett has never been to the Mississippi Coast before, but told WLOX News he is very impressed with what he has seen.

Tournament organizers want to remind anyone going to the tournament, there will be no parking on site. Instead, everyone should park at the IP Resort and a shuttle bus will take them to Fallen Oak.
