Our nation must get our fiscal house back in order

Almost every day in Mississippi we hear of a school district laying off teachers or closing schools. Or, that city governments are talking about furloughing employees or raising the deducible they pay for health care.

This situation is not just happening in our state. The national economic slowdown is creating problems for almost every state in our country.

While we hope this is a short term problem, there is a bigger problem looming on the horizon. It is our national debt of nearly $13 trillion which continues to grow at an alarming rate.

Recently Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke warned that to avoid unsustainable budget deficits in the future, we as a nation, must make some tough choices. We can either support higher taxes, changes to programs such as social security and medicare, or spend less on defense and education or a combination of all of the above.

Currently a blue ribbon reform commission launched by President Barack Obama is starting to consider all of these options. Historically most of these commissions result in a lot of talk and not much action. In this case it is necessary for the commission to come back with some recommendations that will work, or we as a nation will face a national debt that could cripple our country.

Our nation must get our fiscal house back in order making sure our tax dollars are spent wisely and within our country's budget.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.

Full-time Waveland city workers, primarily police officers, who take-home vehicles outside of the city limits could see a change to the city's policy soon. City leaders said the current policy is antiquated and needs to be rewritten into something that would benefit both the officers and the taxpayers.
