Every day needs to be Earth Day - WLOX.com - The News for South Mississippi

Every day needs to be Earth Day

Today is Earth Day. A day in which all communities across this country are asked to pay special attention to their environment.

In South Mississippi there are a number of activities including employees of two casinos, Beau Rivage and Hard Rock joining forces with Mississippi Power to clean up Deer Island.

Deer Island sits just off our coast line and is a favorite for locals and tourists alike who want to get away from the mainland for a short hike or picnic.

We applaud all of the volunteers who are giving of their time today to make our local community a little bit nicer.

The environment should be top of mind for all of us each and every day.

The barrier islands like Petit Bois, Horn, Ship and Cat not only provide recreational opportunities but also, act as a barrier during hurricanes.

South Mississippi's wetlands provide a home for shrimp and other sea life which are so important to our cuisine and economy.

In addition, we are blessed to have many beautiful and scenic rivers like the Wolf and Pascagoula which again are a source of recreation but also are home to many varieties of sea life.

While today may be the official Earth Day, in South Mississippi every day needs to be Earth Day as we live in a fragile but wonderful corner of the earth.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
