Police search for Pascagoula pharmacy thieves

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - Thousands of dollars worth of pain pills are missing from a Pascagoula drug store. Police are looking for whoever broke into the Sav Rex Pharmacy on Ingalls Avenue over the weekend.

The burglary was discovered Sunday, and police say it's just one of several similar pharmacy break-ins in the past year. Police say they need the community's help to catch the thieves.

"You get offended, you get mad," Sav Rex Store Owner Paul Clark said.

Sunday night, Clark got the call that any businessman would hate. He found out thieves broke into his pharmacy and stole a lot of prescription medicine.

"Burglars broke through our front glass door and went right to certain drugs."

After inspecting the store, Clark said he discovered $2,000 worth of Lortabs were missing, but everything else in the store was in place.  Lortab contains the powerful painkiller, Hydrocodone.

"They cleaned us out pretty good," Clark said.

This is not the first time Clark's Sav Rex stores have been hit.  He said within the past five months, more than $4,000 worth of pills have been stolen from his store in downtown Pascagoula and another in Gautier.

"I believe they are selling it, as well as using," Pascagoula Police Investigator Vernon Smith said.

Investigator Smith said Lortab can sell on the street for $10 to $15 a pill.  He thinks thieves tend to target smaller businesses, believing it's less risky.

"It is disappointing to see our merchants having to go through problems with people that have drug problems," Smith said.

Police say there is no surveillance video from the robbery, so they're urging the community to come forward with tips.

"When you have a large quantity of drugs on the street, it can affect the community, which affects us," Smith said.

It's also frustrating for owner Paul Clark, but he's optimistic clues will come in soon to help put the drug thieves behind bars.

"I am hoping they can catch them with WLOX's help."

Police aren't sure if other drugs were taken from the store.  If you have any information about this case, call Pascagoula Police at (228) 762-2211.
