One mom protest aimed at keeping Beauvoir Elementary open

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - It's not a vocal protest, but a visible one against a proposal to close a school in the Biloxi School District. Tuesday morning, Donna Haire will continue her one-person protest at the corner of Pass Road and Iris Street.

Haire has twins attending Kindergarten at Beauvoir Elementary. She lives in D'Iberville, but pays $2,400 in tuition so her children can attend Beauvoir.

Between noon and 3:30 Monday afternoon, Haire held up signs stating "We Believe in Beauvoir" and "Keep Beauvoir Open." Haire said many people are not aware that the Biloxi School Board is considering closing Beauvoir and two other schools because of falling enrollment and state budget cuts.

"People will stop, I've had honks, I've had waves, I've had thumbs up, the whole route. So I'm getting the message through. Sometimes it's not necessarily how many people you have, it's the message that you're portraying," Haire said. "Education is, I think, the utmost right that we have in this country. And it's being taken away from us and put in the hands of businessmen."

Haire said the school board needs to consider other options to save money, like starting school later in the year to help cut down on utility costs, and having classes only four days a week.

She plans to continue her protest, at the same spot, Tuesday morning.
