Keesler AFB opens new post office

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The post-Katrina rebuilding of Keesler Air Force Base is almost complete. Monday, the ribbon was cut on the new base postal center, replacing the one destroyed in the storm.

The original post office was built in 1941, and also suffered from heavy termite damage. The new post office offers new P.O. boxes, as well as plenty of counter space for patrons to do business.

The Biloxi postmaster said it's a major upgrade.

"Very nice. A lot better than what we had before. State of the art," Postmaster Scott Bailey said of the new facility. "We're very proud to be here and look forward to serving the military in years to come here."

The new post office cost $3.3 million. In recent days, a new BX and commissary opened on the base. And a new dormitory that will house more than 150 students is currently under construction.
