St. Patrick students donate 750 lbs of pet food to Humane Society

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The Humane Society of South Mississippi received a huge gift from students at St. Patrick Catholic High School.  The students collected 750 pounds of pet food for the shelter last week.

Students enjoyed a jean dress day for the payment of cat or dog food on Friday.  The HSSM will use the dog and cat food to support its Wagon Train program.  The Humane Society officials say there are many people in our area that are homeless or near homeless at this time. Many of them have pets that they love dearly.

"It would be a real travesty if they had to give up the pets they love because they are experience temporary financial difficulties,"  said HSSM Development Director Jode' Braxton-Hignite in a statement Monday.

For this reason, HSSM created the Wagon Train program which gives pet food to families in order to keep families, pets included, together.

"Through the generosity of these students, we will have the food to supply to our community for the upcoming weeks. The students of St. Patrick Catholic School should be extremely proud of themselves for the service they have provided to the animals and families of our community. HSSM is extremely grateful for their kindness and support," said Braxton-Hignite.
