PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) – The first shipment arrived Wednesday morning at the new Pass Christian Library on Hiern Avenue. The piles of boxes were filled with more than 20,000 books, videos, and music CDs.

"For me right now, it's an unbelievable thing that we're going to have this many brand, new items. I'm a little overwhelmed and very excited," said Pass Christian Head Librarian Sally James.

It was a moment James and her staff had been waiting for since Katrina destroyed the old library and ruined more than 35,000 items.

"We're going to be opening up all the boxes and seeing what we have," said Jessica Herr, the Head of Circulation for the Pass Library.  "It's going to be so nice to have new books in the library, because most of our collection is donations."

"That means there will be a collection of items in here that have never been checked out before," said James.

What's also novel about the library is the way it's separated into four wings, including study areas and a game room just for young adults.

Another unique feature is the children's wing.  Everything in it, from the books to the furniture, was donated by Rotary International. And there will be a large sailboat by the window where the children can climb aboard, read, and let their imaginations drift away.

The workers must finish installing the shelves and librarians are still figuring out where everything should go.  Meanwhile, the staff is counting down to the day when they can start a new chapter in the library's history.

When asked if she was looking forward to moving out of the temporary library trailer, Sally James laughed and responded, "Oh, my gosh, yes! There are five women on top of each other in a trailer that's 28x72.  You just tell me if we're anxious to get out."

The next step involves moving furniture and computers into the building. The new Pass Christian Library is scheduled to open on June 11, which happens to be the library's 37th anniversary.

All lanes of Highway 90 are now open. A Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman says an 18-wheeler crossed the median on Interstate 10 Thursday morning, causing a deadly series of accidents. It was just before 6:00 a.m. That truck was heading west near the Ocean Springs exit. Suddenly, it veered left, crossed the median and smashed into a motorcycle on the eastbound side of I-10. The MHP spokesman says that motorcycle driver died at the scene.

We are not strangers to flooding on the Mississippi Coast. Nor are our neighbors to the west in Louisiana. There are forever ongoing efforts, planning and discussions about how to mitigate flooding. But a recent study by the Rand Corporation is more than a little disturbing.
