GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) – The Margaret Sherry Library on Popp's Ferry Road in Biloxi will soon pull the plug on its outdated computers.  In January, the library received a Knight Foundation Grant to install new PCs and laptops at the Biloxi library and eight other libraries in Harrison County.

Now, Biloxi's head librarian is hoping to get more funding to expand the Parenting Collection at six locations.

"The way book budgets are running these days, we're a public unit.  We're not getting a whole bunch of funding," said Longino.

So on Monday, Longino and ten other people showed up at the Knight Foundation Building in Gulfport to learn more about a new grant program.

"It's an exciting time. We're excited to have this opportunity," said Gulf Coast Community Foundation President Rich Westfall.  "This is a big announcement and it represents, I think, the commitment the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation made to this community."

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation (GCCF) announced that the Knight Foundation has pledged up to $1 million in funding.  This is actually the second endowment given to GCCF. The initial $1 million donation was made in 2003.

"And now that Katrina recovery is well on its way, they wanted to come in and renew our relationship, put another up to $1 million in the fund and allow us to carry on the good work that had taken place since 2005 and create a better, more engaged and informed community," said Westfall.

To be eligible for the grant money, the applicant must be an accredited college or university or its foundation, have non-profit status, or be listed as a public charity.

Longino didn't waste any time searching for the application, in hopes of boosting her book collection.

"We're on short budgets and anything extra, you have to find another way to do it," she said.  "We hope the Gulf Coast Community Foundation will be the right place to go."

The application and details about the funding guidelines will be posted on the Gulf Coast Community Foundation website on Friday. There is no deadline for submitting your requests.
