Hood: Legal review found "no authority to support a suit" over healthcare

JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - On Friday, Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood sent a three page letter to Governor Haley Barbour, along with six pages of supporting legal documents, to explain why his office won't get into the tangle over the healthcare reform law passed by Congress.

More than a dozen states have joined a challenge to the constitutionality of the new law, and both Governor Barbour and Lt. Governor Bryant want Mississippi to join the suit.

In his letter, Hood told the Governor, "Legions of lawyers will litigate all of the possible claims for years. Millions of dollars will be spent on these law firms. Your voice will be well represented by other state politicians... Nevertheless, if you feel compelled to take action... then you are authorized to take action on behalf of the Office of the Governor in your own name."

Hood also said the it would be cheaper if Mississippi waited to join the suit when it gets to the U.S. Supreme Court, and reminded the governor of the old saying "haste makes waste."
