Popp's Ferry Elem. Boys & Girls Club closing

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Budget shortfalls will force the Boys and Girls Club to close its location at Popp's Ferry Elementary School in Biloxi at the end of this school year.

Executive Director Sam Burke met with parents at Thursday evening to explain that the club doesn't have enough funding to keep the Popp's Ferry Elementary location open. One hundred children, ages 5 to 12, attend the Popp's Ferry Elementary club each day.

Burke said operating costs are up at all six Boys and Girls Club sites on the Gulf Coast. Making matters worse, funding has decreased.

"The funding sources simply aren't there anymore, " Burke told WLOX News. "Those funds have come from a variety of sources. Grant funding is lower."

The organization is working to complete its new North Bay facility for fall. Though that club is just a few miles north of the club that is closing, Burke said it cannot take in all of the students from the Popp's Ferry Elementary location.

In addition, Burke says the club does not have transportation available to take students from that school to other clubs, though transportation could eventually be arranged.
